Saying you live "in Akpakpa" does not pin down an address. In the government's geographic database, only one quarter carries the name: Akpakpa-Dodomè, in the 4th district.
A name wider than the quarter
No official source draws an "Akpakpa" area. In everyday use, though, the word spills beyond the quarter and points to the east of Cotonou, across the lagoon. Two people saying "Akpakpa" are not necessarily talking about the same place. Ask for the quarter.
The east-bank quarters
A government notice dated 24 December 2024, about clearing the east bank of the lagoon, names seven waterside quarters: Abokicodji-Lagune, Dédokpo, Kpankpan, Midombo, Adogléta, Hlacomey and Agbato. The first two are in the 4th district, the other five in the 3rd. The notice does not mention Akpakpa.
Facing Sèmè-Podji and Ouémé
Cotonou is bordered to the east by the commune of Sèmè-Podji, in the Ouémé department. According to the government, it is the first town you cross when leaving Cotonou on the motorway to Porto-Novo. Nigeria borders Sèmè-Podji to the east: it does not touch Cotonou.
Akpakpa-Dodomè is not on the edge. On our OpenStreetMap outlines, the easternmost district is the 1st.
What is still missing
The 2013 census figures for Akpakpa-Dodomè are not here yet. They will be added once checked. The list of the 12 quarters of the 4th district is already online.
